Psychologists

Rob Hughes, Ph.D.
Psychologist
Dr. Hughes earned a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Texas Tech University in 1979. He completed an American Psychological Association Approved Clinical Psychology Internship at Olin E. Teague, VAMC in Temple Texas. He completed 1800-hours of Post-Doctoral training in Clinical Neuropsychology at the Ft. Lyon, Colorado VAMC in 1985.
Dr. Hughes left the VA to assume the Director of Psychology position at High Plains Baptist Hospital in Amarillo, Texas in 1986. He entered private practice in Amarillo in 1989. In 1993, he was recruited by Continental Medical Systems to Johnson City, Tennessee to become the Director of Psychology at the Northeast Tennessee Rehabilitation Hospital.
In 1998, Dr. Hughes and Dr. Rodney Sullivan opened a partnership in private practice under the name of Neurobehavioral Associates in Johnson City. Today, Dr. Hughes serves in a full-time position at the Mountain Home VAMC, yet remains passionate about continuing his private practice at GracePointe Counseling Center which serves Neurobehavioral Associates in the role of a management collaborative.
In his private practice, Dr. Hughes specializes in psychotherapy and Christian Counseling. He is a Charter Member of the American Association of Christian Counselors and is a Board Certified member of the American Board of Medical Psychotherapists.
Rob and his wife Sally have two grown children and will proudly show pictures of their brand-new grandson. When not working or traveling to see family, Sally spends her time working for Medical Update (a provider of continuing education courses to nursing home administrators) while Rob pursues duties as an Elder for their church in Johnson City.


Joseph K. Neumann, Ph.D.
Psychologist
God's grace as revealed in the Christian Bible is systematically applied to problems in living through Dr. Neumann's therapy. As declared in Timothy 3:16-17, His Word is sufficient to guide Christians in better understanding of their purposes and duty before God. Christian counseling focuses on practical ways of applying biblical principals to individual and family problems.
Joseph K. Neumann has worked with Christians and Non-Christians for over thirty-five years. Cognitive-Behavioral clinical methods have helped individuals and families with a variety of concerns. These problem areas include depressed feelings, childhood behavior and marital communication, as well as many others. Patient groups include combat veterans, chronic pain patients, couples, families, individuals with mental retardation, psychiatric inpatients and children.
Joseph K. Neumann is licensed as a psychologist. He is also a Certified Biblical Counselor and an Applied Behavior Analyst. In addition to clinical work, Dr. Neumann has been involved with a variety of administrative and clinical research activities. Dr. Neumann has authored over seventy papers, chapters and presentations. He is currently adjunct faculty at the local College of Medicine.
Joseph K. Neumann received his Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from the University of Maryland. His Master's Degree in General Experimental Psychology is from the University of Idaho. Furthermore, his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology was taken at the University of Missouri. He has actively pursued post-doctoral training in a variety of formal and informal settings, including Health Administration Certification in 2006 from East Tennessee State University.
Joe is a member of the Christian Association for Psychological Studies, the National Association for Nouthetic Counselors, and the Intermountain Psychological Association
He has been married for over thirty-five years and has four grown children.


Rodney Sullivan, Ph.D.
Psychologist
Dr. Sullivan was awarded a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Southern Illinois University in 1979. As a native New Yorker, he eagerly returned to the Big Apple completing an American Psychological Association Approved Clinical Psychology Internship at Bellevue Hospital of the New York University Medical Center.
Soon afterwards, Dr. Sullivan accepted a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Neuropsychology at Letterman Army Medical Center in San Francisco, California. He continued to practice Clinical Psychology in the United States Army for the next thirteen years. After serving the United States Army with his expertise, Dr. Sullivan moved to Tennessee where he began seven years of practice in Neuropsychology for the Northeast Tennessee Rehabilitation Hospital.
In 1999 Dr. Sullivan and his business partner, Dr. Rob Hughes, opened for private practice under the name of Neurobehavioral Associates located in Johnson City, Tennessee. Today, GracePointe Counseling Center serves Neurobehavioral Associates in the role of a management collaborative where Dr. Sullivan continues to provide outstanding care for his clients.
In addition to specializing as a Clinical Neuropsychologist, Dr. Sullivan is a Board Certified Member of the American Academy of Pain Management. He is most interested in helping clients contend with the challenges of cognitive processing difficulties, aging, cancer coping/recovery, grief and loss.


John Thurman, Ph. D.
Psychologist
Dr. Thurman was born and raised in the suburbs around Atlanta, GA. After painful failures in the careers of Alligator Wrangling and Championship Dirt Bike Racing, he decided on the field of Psychology. He obtained his BS degree from the University of Georgia, with a major in Psychology and a Minor in Spanish. His interest in religion and spirituality led him to Fuller Seminary where he completed his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the American Psychological Association (APA) Accredited Graduate School of Psychology, and his M.A. in Theology from the Graduate School of Theology. Dr. Thurman completed his APA Accredited Internship at James H. Quillen Mountain Home V.A.M.C. in Johnson City, Tennessee. There, he worked on rotations including Neuropsychology, Substance Abuse, and Primary Care.
Dr. Thurman and his wife, Amanda, enjoyed the internship year so much they decided to settle in Johnson City. They live there with their two boys, Bryant (4) and Wiley (2). Dr. Thurman currently maintains a general private practice, provides Psychological Services in nursing homes, and teaches occasional classes at the local college as an adjunct instructor. He still someday hopes to regain his crown in dirt bike racing.
